Preparing Appliances, Kitchens and Gardens

Appliance being prepared for collection

Appliances and outbuildings cause more last-minute delays than anything else, because they need preparation that can't be done while the crew waits.

Washing machines and dishwashers

  • Disconnect and drain the day before, not on the morning.
  • Refit the transit bolts if you still have them — this is what protects the drum.
  • Leave the door open overnight so the seal dries out.

Fridges and freezers

Defrost at least 24 hours ahead and dry the interior. Fridges should travel upright where possible, and be left to stand before being switched on at the new address.

Sheds, garages and gardens

  • Drain fuel from mowers and strimmers — we can't transport fuel.
  • Bag loose tools; a shed full of loose items takes far longer to load.
  • Empty plant pots of soil and water, or accept they'll travel last.
  • Decide early what's staying — sheds are the most common source of forgotten volume.
