Before assuming an item can't go in, work through the options in order. Most sofas that 'don't fit' actually do, on a different angle.
Work through these in order
- Try it on the diagonal, upright rather than flat — this solves the majority of cases.
- Remove the feet, the back cushions and any bolt-on arms.
- Take the internal door off its hinges, then the frame's doorstop bead if needed.
- Check a patio door, French window or large ground-floor window as an alternative route.
- For modular sofas, separate the sections properly rather than forcing them.
When it truly won't go
Some items were built in the room, or the property has been altered since. At that point the sensible options are storage, sale or disposal — and we can collect for any of the three so it isn't left blocking the hallway.
Avoiding it entirely next time
Measure the new property's doors and staircase turns before you commit to bringing an item, especially for anything bought during the move.
